Animals Need Health Studies

Information for researchers

The Wild Animal Health Fund supports research projects that benefit zoo animal and wildlife health and welfare. Projects are expected to produce new concepts, methods, better understanding of the subject matter species and disseminate their findings via peer-reviewed publications and any other relevant outreach efforts.

We evaluate each proposal on the scientific merit by disclosing background information, set objectives, the study design, relevance, impact, and expertise involved in carrying out the project. The overall feasibility of obtaining the objectives is reviewed and budgets must be justified.

We have a research grant committee that comprises zoo and wildlife veterinarians to rank each proposal. These professionals have first-hand experience working with zoo animals and wildlife and understand the importance of research and zoological medicine for animal health.

We have two categories of funding available, which range in the standard grant maximum of $20,000 and a small grant maximum of $7,500. Small grants are intended to foster innovation and training in research and are often trainee-led projects, pilot studies, or opportunistic additions to an ongoing research effort. Small grants may be narrower in scope than standard proposals but must meet the same scientific standards. The application process is identical for the two categories.

The funding portfolio for 2024 is $260,000. We hope to have between 15 – 20 projects approved in the spring of 2024.

We welcome scientists to review the guidelines and evaluation process. But please know at least one primary investigator must be an AAZV member.

We fund the following expense items in a grant proposal:
